A Report on Ms. ■Progress on her Arithmetic and Japanese at KU
for the parents and staff meeting on July 17, 2019

July 16, 2019

General Comments
Considering that she is learning Japanese and other subjects at the level of native Japanese speaker,■is  doing very well in general. Her positive attitude is very good. I am also learning a lot from teaching her, for which I am very grateful. I hope to be of service to her and her family in every way I can during your stay in Sagami-Ono.

As for lessons, ■ concentrate on what she has to do when she has a test coming or has a clear target that she has to tackle. She is sometimes carried away by something that she finds funny, which is natural and usual for any 2nd grader. Yet, it can sometimes be obstructive to her lessons. Leaning in a relaxed atmosphere is important, though certain level of self-discipline may be needed when learning.

Arithmetic:
She doesn’t have much problem with calculation so long as the numbers are less than 3 digits. Additions such as “168 + 839” can be troublesome for her. The same is true of subtraction. Yet, this is a matter of practice and I don’t think it a big problem.

She is having hard time in getting the questions right and making what’s written in sentences into a series of mathematical formula. As written below, her Japanese does not have the level of accuracy needed in handling math problems “without some kind of guessing.” Though she can have fun with friends and teachers in Japanese, it doesn’t mean that she understands 100% of what she hears and reads. ・・・・(以下省略)

Japanese:
■’s scores on her Kanji test have improved. It is due to timely practice before each test at KU and at home.
Although she can get good scores if she is well informed of the reading material and can prepare herself through practices before tests, her reading comprehension leaves much to be desired, reasons for which are
① lack of vocabulary
1. This can be efficiently altered through trying to understand every word she encounters in her textbooks.・・・・・・(以下省略)

That’s all from me. I am looking forward to tomorrow’s meeting.
